Four hundred years have passed since the War of the Unification ended and the year was set to nought. Ten Great Houses have ruled the Banner-lands ever since — the present year is 396 A.U. — and each of them is less a family than a philosophy of leadership: a wager about what people are, and what they can be asked to become.
The founding pact, the Tenfold Compact, bears ten seals — some say eleven.
The question these books ask is never which house is good. It is: which house would you follow?

The name
Aure — a low gold light, the gleam of a coal not yet gone to ash. Fold — an old word for held country, the ground where a flock is kept through the dark. Aurefold: the kept land under a failing light — a realm named for what it is still trying to hold.
